january 2003

From The Director

Aloha,

The HVCB's 2003 Convention Calendar will be available this month to all Convention level members. The calendar will be available online and will list definite meetings and incentive programs generated by our Corporate Meetings & Incentives (CMI) team in the years to come. As HVCB will no longer produce the annual Convention Bulletin printed version, a login and password will be sent for online access. The CMI bookings will be updated monthly to reflect future meetings and incentive programs coming to Hawaii and will provide meeting dates, venues, number of delegates, as well as contact information provided by meeting planners (Note: the convention calendar only reflects bookings that have been approved to be listed by the client).

For further information about the CMI department, please contact Mike Murray, Director of Sales at (808) 924-0253 or email mmurray@hvcb.org.

To add the CMI Convention Calendar to your membership program, email gsalvador@hvcb.org.

Mahalo,

Gina Salvador

A Message From The President

Aloha and Happy New Year!

Welcoming a new year is always a time of great excitement and anticipation. On behalf of the entire HVCB `Ohana on all Islands, I would like to express my sincere thanks and appreciation to you for your continued support and commitment. Through the contributions of our members, the entire HVCB organization successfully continues to strengthen Hawai'i's brand presence and messages of diversity and Aloha to consumers around the globe.

During the coming year, we know our organization must continue to evolve and stay ahead of the curve, seeking new opportunities and extending our reach. Together, with the active participation of all HVCB members, we will leverage our relationships for the benefit of residents and visitors alike.

As your global marketing partner, HVCB offers unique opportunities to gain exposure and extend your reach to targeted audiences in all major market areas through trade-shows, cooperative advertising, public relations, promotions and more. The on-going expansion and enhancement of technology and the Internet continues to allow our marketing partners to be connected to an ever-growing marketplace.

There were challenges and successes in 2002, and I want to thank you for your participation with us during the past year. Without hesitation, I can say that with your help, 2003 will be a year of achievement and accomplishment for Hawai'i's tourism industry throughout all the Islands of Aloha - Kaua'i, O'ahu, Moloka'i, Maui, Lana'i and the Big Island.

All best wishes for a healthy, peaceful and prosperous New Year!

Mahalo and Aloha,

2003 Partner Online Education Series Plan

In response to the Member Survey last December, a program has been developed that is targeted at addressing many of your needs and questions.  The main goal of the Partner Online Education Series (POES) is to improve the membership's interactive marketing performance, as a whole, and to improve the communication between HVCB and the members about opportunities for involvement.

The foundation of the content will be based on a PowerPoint presentation that will be saved to a Web site.  Around this foundation we will add an online meeting/presentation and Web-published Q&A related to the month's editorial topic.  The end result is a monthly collection of content that is relevant to member needs because it is driven by the survey results and supportive of HVCB efforts because the editorial calendar is integrated with interactive marketing plans.

Details of the POES program are as follows:

1. PowerPoint-centric presentation available in multiple formats

Members will be to:

Download PDF printouts of the PowerPoint presentation.

Play an "online streaming version" PowerPoint that will include voice and animation effects.

Play or download an "online streaming video" of the presentation that will include actual demonstrations as necessary.

Download the actual PowerPoint files for local review.

2. Online Meeting, Presentation and Interactive Q&A

We plan on using a pre-announced time to host an online "Webinar" meeting where interested members can attend a live version of the PowerPoint presentation followed by  live Q&A.

3. Fully moderated message board capturing presentation and followup Q&A

We will use a message board infrastructure to capture and store Q&A related to the monthly editorial topic.  All Q&A from the live presentation as well as any followup Q&A will be stored in this section.

4. Above features become part of the collection on member Web site for future reference

The combination of PowerPoint content, live online meetings, and stored Q&A will be permanently recorded and available for current and future members. As more issues gather, this will become a growing and important asset to allow the entire membership to embrace and activate new interactive marketing knowledge.

The Planned Editorial Calendar for 2003 is as follows:

February:              Adding photo: how and why

March:                   Updating copy: how and why

April:                      Analyzing stat reports: how and why

May:                       Competitive analysis: how and why

June:                      Writing for the web: examples and references

July:                       Marketing: answering the customer questions

August:                 Marketing: closing the sale with online commerce

September:          Marketing: getting the search engine traffic

October:                Marketing: delivering rich content

November:            Marketing: email marketing basics

December:           How to update your site by yourself

Janurary '04:       Marketing: Building a Internet distribution network

E-Membership Minute

Email marketing, part 1 of 2.

A reader asks, "We have a Web site that's doing well and need to take it to the next level. What do you suggest?"

The area I see with the greatest potential that is getting substandard attention is email-based marketing. I'm not talking about the hated spam that we all get, but rather using email as a way to maintain top of mind awareness with your customer. To become a welcomed, regular entry into one's email inbox is an extremely powerful way to increase customer retention, deliver high customer-perceived value, and establish a rich communication link for invaluable market feedback.

So what does it take to get into your customer's inbox? The same kind of value it takes to get into your inbox! And that is: valuable content that either educates the customer on a subject they care about or saves the customer time. Think about the electronic newsletters that you've subscribed to and still read regularly and you'll have a pretty good idea of what type of content you need to produce in order to be welcomed into your customer's inbox.

For instance, what kinds of things save your customer time? Does your customer buy your product on a regular basis? Would they be interested in knowing about "hot deals" if/when they come up? How about a weekly/monthly status report on outstanding projects, deliverables, orders, shipping, etc? What type of useful product-related educational content would the customer consider helpful? Can you deliver a regular email with new applications of your product that your customer will find valuable?

Once you've decided on what kind of content you will publish, plan out the details of how you'll actually do it and that includes creating the list, finding the right email list processing service provider, and of course actually sending out the email on a regular and consistent basis.

The most important thing to remember is this: No one wants blatant advertising or empty self-promotion. (Do you?) And of course the last thing you want to receive is the dreaded "unsubscribe me!" email, so make sure your content is focused on customer's needs and perspective. On the next issue I'll get more into the details involved in creating a successful inbox marketing program.

Send me your toughest e-business questions and if the topic is of general interest, I'll happily post your question and the answer.
