Domestic Air Seats to Hawai'i Reach Record High in 2003; Momentum to Continue Into 2004

Air carriers have added more than 490,000 new scheduled non-stop domestic air seats to Hawaii in 2003, reaching an estimated record high of 5,951,644 total seats, according to an HVCB analysis of Official Airlines Guides flight schedules.  Air seats from the U.S. mainland to Hawaii will surpass last year's levels by 9.0 percent, and eclipse the previous record high seen in 2000 by 4.6 percent.  This performance will boost total nonstop air seats to the Islands to 8.6 million, 3.7 percent above 2002 levels.  The trend in increasing domestic air seats is projected to continue into 2004 - OAG schedules as of December 2003 show a first quarter 2004 increase of 14.3 percent, and a second quarter 2004 increase of 10.4 percent (resulting in a 12.3 percent rise in domestic capacity for the first half of 2004).

Detailed air seats data is available on Market Trends Online: http://www.gohawaii.com/exec/109925

The HVCB's Online Convention Calendar is available to all Convention level members.  The calendar is available online and lists definite meetings and incentive programs generated by our Corporate Meetings & Incentives (CMI) team.  As HVCB no longer produces the annual Convention Bulletin printed version, a login and password is sent to each Convention Level member for online access.

The CMI bookings are updated monthly to reflect future meetings and incentive programs coming to Hawaii and will provide meeting dates, venues, number of delegates, as well as contact information provided by meeting planners (Note: the convention calendar only reflects bookings that have been approved to be listed by the client).

Hawaii's Big Island Call To America Program Big Success

Early in 2003, worldwide turmoil with the War in Iraq, SARS fears and continued post 9/11 recovery threatened Hawaii's travel industry. It was against this backdrop that the Big Island Visitors Bureau (BIVB) set in motion its Call to America public relations initiative.

The Call to America program was designed to garner destination editorial coverage across the nation for Hawaii's Big Island. Launched in March, Call to America became BIVB's largest-ever public relations initiative. Call to America targeted travel journalists from all 50 states with this offer: travel to Hawaii's Big Island; spend a week experiencing the destination, then produce editorial coverage.

The Call to America program value is estimated at $916,000 with impressions at just under 14 million readers. Writers that visited Hawaii's Big Island have represented a diverse cross-section of publications.  Because of the overwhelming success of Call to America, we'll be launching another major public relations initiative in

2004 focusing on the Big Island's Top Ten States.

For more information on BIVB please visit: www.bigisland.org or call (808) 886-1655.

BIVB Off And Running For 2004

With not a moment to waste, BIVB will be hitting the road early in January and will continue non-stop for the first quarter of 2004. Vivian Landrum and Laura Aquino will begin BIVB media blitzes as they travel to New York to host media functions and make media calls January 19 - 23, then off to Texas and Colorado February 23 - 27, then ending with San Francisco and surrounding areas March 15 - 19. Anyone interested in joining them, please contact Vivian at 886-1655 or vlandrum@hvcb.org

Eric Dutro, our "road warrior," will begin his Hawaii's Big Island Showcase series in Seattle, Tacoma, and Portland on January 27 - 29. This follows a stop at Expedia in Tacoma on January 26 as Eric visits with these call center agents to educate them on Hawaii's Big Island. February finds Eric on both mainland coasts as he participates in the L.A. Times Travel Show February 7 - 8, and then hits the Big Apple for the New York Times Travel Show Feb. 27 - 29. Perhaps Eric can warm up in March at the Arizona Aloha Festival held in Phoenix March 20 - 21.

For more information contact BIVB and ask for Eric at (808) 886-1655 or via e-mail at: edutro@hvcb.org.

You and I are going to start a revolution.  I'm going to show you how you can update your own Web site. And it's going to be almost as easy as word processing.

We're going to use a new software I tested (and am now using!) called "Macromedia Contribute2". It feels like a Web browser. All you do is pull up the Web page you want to edit, click a button, and Voila! Just like that, you can easily change text and graphics. Click another button, and the online Web page is updated.

What makes Contribute2 so amazing is that it requires virtually no technical expertise. If you consider yourself a pretty good Microsoft Office user, you'll have no problem. And there's nothing to setup, either. All you need to know is how to get at your Web site's "back end" and your ISP can provide you with that.

Does this mean you don't need Web designers? No. You still need to hire people who have a proven background in graphic design and layout. But one thing's for sure, once that Web page has been designed and published, you can take over with Contribute2, for sure.

What's the catch? Not too much. Contribute2 only costs $99.  The only thing it can't update is Web sites that are "dynamic", meaning they are built from databases. Your Web designer can let you know if your site is dynamic or not.

For 90% of us who have regular Web sites, Contribute2 is a dream come true. You don't have to wait for small changes to be made, and you don't have to pay a high hourly fee for what amounts to word processing.

I've published a complete online demonstration, complete with videos for you to review. And it's at: http://search.gohawaii.com/kw/poes/

If for whatever reason you can't get at the video, trust me: go download a free 30 day evaluation of Contribute2 and you'll be amazed at what you can do.

Let us know what you think!

Hawai'i Visitors and Convention Bureau
