Market Trends: Domestic Air Seats to Hawai'i Recover Quickly in 2002

Market Trends: Western U.S. kept the planes coming in 2002 and then some.  Airlines flew nearly 5.5 million seats on scheduled, nonstop domestic flights to Hawai'i in 2002, surpassing 2001 levels by 3.8 percent.  Despite nationwide air seat capacity being cut by 4.4 percent in 2002, domestic seat capacity to Hawai'i surpassed 2001 levels by June 2002, and exceeded 2000 levels for most of the second half of the year (July, August, November and December).  This phenomenal growth was fueled mainly by increases in nonstop capacity from the U.S. West (points west of the Rockies), which made up 85 percent of all domestic capacity to Hawai'i.  Because American travelers opted to travel to destinations closer-to-home in the wake of the September 11 attacks, nonstop seats from the U.S. East to Hawai'i recovered at a much slower pace than capacity from the U.S. West.

For more detailed air seat capacity statistics, visit Market Trends Online at www.hvcb.org/trends. To request a user name and password to access Market Trends Online and/or to sign up to receive HVCB Tourism Industry Update each week via e-mail, contact HVCB Membership Department at membership@hvcb.org.

Germany's Madame Magazine visits Hawai'i

After much discussion between HVCB-Germany and the editors of Madame Magazine, Travel Editor Christine von Pahlen extended her scheduled Australia visit to include a week and a half of research in Hawai'i.  Madame is an upscale, glossy ladies magazine that targets high-income readership and represents a very good exposure opportunity for Hawai'i in the high-end European market.

In cooperation with the OVB, KVB, and BIVB, the Developing International Markets Division produced a 10-day trip for Ms. von Pahlen that focused on the history, art, shopping and fashion on O'ahu, the scenic beauty of the Na Pali Coast and Hanalei on Kaua'i, and the culture, lifestyle, and Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park on the Big Island.  With major sponsorship from the Sheraton Moana Surfrider Hotel, Kahala Mandarin Oriental Hawai'i, Hyatt Regency Kaua'i Resort & Spa, Historic Shipman House, Palms Cliff House B&B, and the Fairmont Orchid, Hawai'i, Ms. von Pahlen left Hawai'i with a very different perception of what our islands have to offer.  During her stay, she was treated to a visit to Shangri La (the Hawai'i estate of the late Doris Duke), a dinner hosted by Chef Glenn Chu at Indigo Eurasian Cuisine. Trolley passes were provided by Asian Pacific Advisors, shopping at Hilo Hattie and a sunset cruise along the Na Pali Coast by Holo Holo Charters.  Aloha Airlines, Budget and Alamo Rent-A-Car provided discounted rates for her inter-island airfare and rental cars.

A very special thanks to Hugh O'Reilley of FX Group, who offered his time and valuable insight in helping to ensure that the trip would be of great value to both Ms. von Pahlen and Hawai'i.

For more information, please contact Daniel Chun, Event Coordinator at 808-924-0251 or dchun@hvcb.org.  Mahalo for all your support!
