Airways Adds an Estimated 67,000 Seats to Hawaii
Vancouver-based, low-cost
air carrier, Harmony Airways (HMY), announced that it
will add an estimated 67,000 seats (based on OAG figures)
between Vancouver and Hawaii over the next 12 months,
according to the Conference Board of Canada. HMY will
launch three weekly flights to Honolulu and one to Maui,
beginning June 25. Flights during the winter season
will be daily to Honolulu, and three times per week
to Maui.

Marketing Contractors Update Meeting
On Wednesday - May
12, 2004 the Hawaii Tourism Authority and HTA contractors
will be holding a meeting at the Hawaii Convention Center
from 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm. An update on Hawaii's 2004 Annual
Tourism Marketing Plan will be presented; this meeting
is open to the public.

Travel Trade Marketing Activities in March
Below are some of the
events and activities HVCB's travel trade marketing
team participated in during the month of March:
March 1 - 4
American Airlines 2004 Travel Agent Shows in Dallas,
Ft.Worth, St. Louis, and Chicago - HVCB was one of 28
Hawaii exhibitors to share info and news of Hawaii with
the 1,000+ travel professionals in attendance at these
four shows.
March 2 - 3
The Fun Sun Vacations Hawaii Road Shows in Victora,
Courtenay, and Nanaimo, Canada - HVCB's regional director,
Canada, attended all three shows.
Events sponsored by Canadian wholesaler Fun Sun Vacations
and Hawaii's Big Island Visitors Bureau.
March 5 - 6
HVCB's Regional Director, U.S. East, Jennifer Cabasag,
joined seven Hawaii suppliers to meet with over 60 top
GIANTS travel agents at the 2003 GIANTS Forum in Chicago.
The event was a good opportunity to share with the agents
what's new in the Islands of Aloha.
March 10 -11
American Airlines 2004 Travel Agent Shows Burlington,
MA, Baltimore, MD - Reports indicate these were excellent
shows with plenty of agents in attendance from the Burlington
and Baltimore areas.
March 15 - 18
American Airlines 2004 Travel Agent Shows - Manhattan
Beach, Pasadena, Irvine, and Santa Clara, California.
Our representative reported a high demand for Hawaii
among the 700+ travel professionals she spoke with at
these four west coast events in mid March. Agents indicated
that sales to the Hawaiian Islands are up from 2003
levels.
March 24 - 25
Over 400 agents turned out for the Apple Vacations Product
Launches in Costa Mesa and La Jolla. Forty other
Hawaii exhibitors turned out for each. Agents are reporting
that upscale client bookings are up from these areas.
March 26 - 27
Over 150 Virtuoso travel
agents visited our Hawaii booth at the Virtuoso North
Eastern Regional Boston event.
March 26 - 28
Christina Aldanese with HVCB central, Edie Hafdahl of
the Kauai Visitors Bureau, and Tom Risko of the Maui
Visitors Bureau participated at the Arizona ASTA Trade
Show & Round Table. More
than 300 agents took part in the Hawaii Destination
Specialist training and became certified as Hawaii Destination
Specialist.
March 30 - 31
Funjet Vacations Product Launch - Birmingham, AL, Knoxville,
TN. Over 100 agents turned out in each city, most reporting
that Hawaii business is strong in their area for 2004.

The Oahu Visitors Bureau Visits Australia
and Japan
In May, OVB continues
it's sales promotions in Australia supporting the new
Hawaiian Airlines flight from Honolulu to Sydney. OVB
will participate with the other island chapters and
Hawaii Tourism Oceania on the inaugural flight meeting
with key media on the "Aloha Down Under" road
show. OVB will be meeting with key retail agents and
meeting planners from May 31 - June 4. Nineteen Hawaii
industry partners will attend the road show. Many industry
businesses that could not attend sent collateral support.
OVB will also be active in Japan coordinating two OVB
consumer initiatives. The Shonann Sai & Aloha Market
event in Chigasaki is expected to have 100,000 consumers
attend over the May 15-16 weekend. The Oahu Festival
in Nagoya, that was very successful last year, promises
a repeat from May 20-23, 2004. Three Hawaii Tourism
Japan/Hawaii Kai East seminars will also be attended
by OVB in May.
Other
OVB activities coming up in May
OVB teams up with the "Arts with Aloha" in supporting
their press trip highlighting the arts & culture
of Oahu. OVB is also participating in a Polynesian Cultural
Center press trip scheduled in May showcasing the diversity
of Oahu.
OVB's Oahu Destination
Specialist on-island (ODS Level II) program begins with
a program which hosts select retail agents from APPLE
Vacations and All About Hawaii. At the end of May, another
group of select agents will go through the intensive
on island training. OVB has been working with various
wholesalers from both North America and Australia on
their FAMs, offering ODS Level I training.

Northwest
Airlines Plans Seattle-Kona Route
News accounts reveal Northwest Airlines is planning
new service to Kona International Airport starting this
summer. Northwest Airlines now flies daily from Seattle
to Maui, and State Transportation officials confirmed
that the carrier will add a Kona stop prior to heading
back to Seattle. This new route will be Seattle-Maui-Kona-Seattle.
The daily Boeing 757 flight carries 150 passengers and
will connect Seattle coffee fans directly to Kona coffee
country.
Northwest Airlines will join Aloha Airlines, United
Airlines, American Airlines, Air Canada, and Japan Airlines
as regularly scheduled carriers to Kona International
Airport. Charter airlines and many private jets also
frequent Kona International Airport.
The Big Island Visitors Bureau plans advertising, sales
and media blitzes in Seattle to market the destination
and promote the new route.

Ka Hula Piko Hula Festival - "A Celebration of
the Birth of Hula on Molokai"
Join
Molokai and the rest of Hawaii as we celebrate the
13th Annual Ka Hula Piko Festival at Papohaku Beach
Park, Kaluakoi, Molokai from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm.
Admission is free! There will be a variety of Entertainment,
Hawaiian Food and hand made crafts by the people
of Molokai.
Two lectures will be presented by Kumu Hula John
Kaimikaua and Halau Hula O Kukunaokala on Thursday,
May 13 and Friday, May 14 from 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm
at Kulanaoiwi Halau. Each of the lectures is different,
and is based on the cultural theme. The lectures
are free and open to the public.

excursions will also be held on Friday, May 13
from 10:00 am -10:45 am at Kapuaiwa Coconut Grove
across the street from Kulanaoiwi. The on-site

KVB at the 26th Annual Visitor Industry Charity Walk
The 26th Annual Visitor Industry
Charity Walk is Hawaii's largest single-day fundraiser
which takes place across the state. On Kauai the charity
walk consists of a 2.9 mile walk beginning at the Historic
County Building on Rice Street. The walk raises money
for local charities on all islands and checkpoints are
staffed by Hawaii hotels and allied organizations. Food,
drinks, and first aid will be provided to walkers. Registration
begins at 6:30 am on the day of the walk and the walk
starts at 7:00 am. Come down and sample all of the great
food, goodies, and entertainment!

Hawaii Promotion in Sinn & Leffers Fashion Shops
Dreamy Hawaii was the hot-topic of the new in-store
program of Sinn & Leffers, a young fashion chain
of Karstadt - Germany's largest department store. In
all 48 shops throughout Germany, a 4-minute Hawaii report
was repeated 20 times a day on large TV screens placed
in various locations throughout the store. The promotion
took place during the month of April and addressed some
1.5 million people with a Hawaii destination report,
fashion tips, and music clips.

Start of Dole & Hawaii Promotion
The European Dole & Hawaii promotion
started April 12 and will bring 2.2 million pineapples
and 18 million bananas grown in Hawaii to Germany, Austria,
Switzerland, Scandinavia, and Eastern European countries.
The campaign will be promoted in hundreds of retail
markets with posters and 60,000 Dole & Hawaii postcards.
An extra mini Dole & Hawaii site has been created
within the www.hawaii-tourism.de
website.

Hawaii

Resorts Family
Aston
Hotels and Resorts will bring ten top-tour wholesalers
to Hawaii from May 13 - 22. The group consists of eight
senior staff from the top tour wholesalers in Sydney,
plus one Qantas escort, and one Aston representative
from Sydney. They will be visiting Oahu, Maui, and Kauai.
Hawaiian Airlines launch activity
Hawaiian Airlines is planning
two major launch functions on May 17-18 with the Australian
travel industry and Australian media. Details of the events

Hawaii Represented at Pow Wow,
America's Largest International Travel Event
The Hawaii Tourism Authority (HTA), HVCB's Island Chapters,
and HTA's international marketing contractors representing
Japan, Europe, Other Asia and Oceania, along with 21
Hawaii vendors participated in the Travel Industry Association
of America's 2004 International Pow Wow held on April
26-28, 2004 in Los Angeles, California.
The 36th Annual International Pow Wow brought international
buyers in direct contact with domestic suppliers via
pre-scheduled 20-minute business-oriented meetings.
The arrangement allowed for HTA and its marketing
team to establish new as well as maintain existing travel
relationships. Over 140 meetings took place with
international wholesalers and tour companies by the
HTA marketing team, in addition to an all-island media
release highlighting newsworthy travel announcements
distributed to 250 international media. Participation
in Pow Wow by HTA's international marketers and Island
Chapters presented the opportunity to sell Hawaii together
and deliver a compelling message of why the Hawaii experience
is unique and diverse.
