well as in revenue
generated
per
available room

aloha spirit
These phenomenal achievements could not have been
realized without your continued support and partnership.
For our visitors, your company and employees are
the face of Hawaii; you deliver on the promise

Sharing
Aloha Helps Nonprofits Promote Activities
HVCB is inviting nonprofit
organizations statewide to take advantage of a free
program that allows them to share Hawaii's spirit of
aloha when traveling abroad. Called "Sharing Aloha,"
the online program - sharingaloha.com
- is sponsored by the Hawaii Tourism Authority and operated
by HVCB as a public service to help nonprofits promote
Hawaii-inspired activities overseas, and have the opportunity
to receive promotional gift items for goodwill exchanges.
The program's concept was developed by Senator Donna
Mercado Kim, chair of the state senate tourism committee.
Sharing aloha is easy to use -- and free. Nonprofits
planning an event overseas -- like a school band marching
in a parade, hula halau performing in a festival, or
a youth sports team playing in a tournament -- can access
sharingaloha.com and apply online to take advantage
of the program's benefits. This program will help nonprofits
promote their activities and serve as "ambassadors
of aloha" for the State of Hawaii.

HVCB's Corporate,
Meetings, and Incentive sales and marketing wrapped
up their marketing meeting recently in Hawaii. The
team is located in key feeder markets in North America,
all of whom have tremendous client relationships
within the industry and a superb understanding of
Hawaii as a meetings destination. The purpose of
this annual meeting is to recap 2004 major CMI marketing
initiatives and strategies and develop future targeted
marketing programs. The objective in 2004 is to
market Hawaii as a meeting and incentive destination,
and to generate 660,000 lead hotel room nights for
the various hotel and resort properties around the
state. The visitor spending created by Hawaii's
meetings industry has a powerful impact that ripples
throughout the state, helping to support numerous
ancillary businesses on all islands that services
groups with transportation, food, retail goods,
and activities through their stay.

Mahalo Nui Loa for Stopping by the 2004 Hawaii Small
Business Fair!
| |
Mahalo to
all our small business members that attended the
2004 Hawaii Small Business Fair at Kapiolani Community
College on Saturday, May 22.
This free fair was perfect for anyone and everyone
who was interested in starting a business, expanding
a business or just keeping a business alive in our
current economy. From seminars on website design
and guerilla marketing to a mini-tradeshow, this
year’s fair provided a wealth of information
for small business owners and potential small business
owners alike.
HVCB was proud to be among the exhibitors featured
at this year’s fair! Again, mahalo to those
that were able to attend.

HVCB Team Members Take Visitor Industry Charity Walk
In Stride!
On Saturday, May 15th, HVCB employees and friends braved
the rain and stormy weather in order to participate
in the 26th Annual Visitor Industry Charity Walk. In
the spirit of our working Ohana and HVCB’s community
involvement with this very visible and worthwhile event,
which helps to raise funds benefiting many charitable
organizations within Hawaii’s community, the wet
day was well worth it. Whether it was enjoying the great
food at each of the various check points along the walk
route, bumping into a business partner and/or friend
from another company, enjoying the springtime spurts
of torrential downpour while walking, or interacting
with this year’s Miss Hawaii Scholarship Program
contestants at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Beach Resort
& Spa checkpoint, all in all, for those of us who
participated it was a great showing of HVCB support
for this industry-wide event. Mahalo to all of the members
of the HVCB Ohana and friends, who came out to join
us for this year’s event.
Aloha!

Family
Travel Heats Up This Summer
As
world events have created uncertain times in the wake
of the attacks of 9/11 and the Iraq War, U.S. consumers
have placed increased emphasis on strengthening family
relationships and stated increased interest in family
travel. With its natural beauty and wide range of activities
for the entire ohana, Hawaii continues to be an ideal
destination for family travelers; and this summer should
be no exception.
To provide you with a better understanding of consumers
in this market segment, the following are a few Family
Travel Facts regarding family visitors to Hawaii:
. Family travelers (i.e., visitors
traveling with children under 18 years of age) make
up 15 percent of
U.S.
visitors arrivals to Hawaii, according to statistics
from the state Department of Business,
Economic Development and Tourism. Families account for
a slightly larger share of U.S. West
travelers (18%) than U.S.
East travelers (12%).
. Among the top reasons for coming to Hawaii,
the majority (83%) of U.S. family travelers come to
the
state for the primary purpose
of vacationing. Another eight percent come to visit
friends and relatives;
six percent come to attend/participate
in a wedding/honeymoon; and four percent come for a
convention/conference/seminar.
. U.S.
family visitors are active vacationers who take on wide
range of activities, lead by shopping (98%
of US visitors), recreation
activities (98%), sightseeing (92%) and cultural activities
(83%).
. On the
international front, families account for nearly one
out of every five arrivals (20%) from Japan,
but less than one out of ten
(8%) arrivals from Canada.
