Message From the President

Aloha HVCB Ohana,

Hawaii’s new statewide fall promotion campaign with the tagline “there’s plenty of time to do absolutely nothing…on your plane ride home,” underlines the multitude of activities to be enjoyed on Hawaii’s six major islands during the season.

Come Experience Hawaii highlights the state’s many outdoor activities and adventures, including golf, hiking, and snorkeling during the typical post-summer season slowdown in travel. The campaign also emphasizes educational enrichment (e.g., museums, historical sites, cultural heritage tours); and other “indulging” activities like Hawaii’s diverse shopping, world-renowned dining, and state-of-the-art spas. Furthermore, the campaign will feature Hawaii’s “Aloha Festivals” featuring Hawaiian music and dance, floral parades, block parties, cultural exhibits and performances on all Islands.

As Jay Talwar, our vice president of marketing, stated, “The kids are back in school and the post-summer season slow down in travel represents an especially good time for adults to reward themselves with fun and romance in the islands.” He elaborated by saying that “there’s more value in pricing, accommodations are abundant, airports are less busy, tee times are easier to come by, and there are lots of cool things to do and see.”

In short, “there’s plenty of time to do absolutely nothing…on your plane ride home.”

Mahalo,

John Monahan
President/CEO

Hawaii is Ranked Among Top Summer Destinations by Travel Agents and Consumers

According to the “Summer Hot Spots Survey” conducted by the American Society of Travel Agents (ASTA) and Fodor’s LLC, Hawaii ranked as the fourth most popular state destination this summer by travel agents. With 11.1 percent of the vote, Hawaii ranked just behind Florida (29.2%), Nevada (19.8%), and California (11.5%).

Meanwhile, ASTA website users (travel consumers) had an even better outlook on the Islands of Aloha, ranking Hawaii as the second most desirable domestic "hotspot" of the summer:

1. Las Vegas (16.6%)
2. Hawaii (15.3%)
3. Orlando (8.0%)
4. New York (5.2%)
5. San Francisco (3.9%)

Oahu Joins Hawaii Partners in Heating up the Market “Down Under”

The Oahu Visitors Bureau joined other Hawaii partners in supporting Hawaii Tourism Oceania’s (HTO) cooperative efforts with Hawaiian Airlines in promoting Hawaii to the Australian market. Thanks to Hawaiian Airlines non-stop service to Sydney four times a week, massive marketing by Hawaiian and HTO, and an improving economy, Hawaii can better target additional visitors from Australia. The Oahu Visitors Bureau (OVB) joined Hawaiian Airlines on their inaugural flight from Sydney on May 18th. Later, in early June, OVB participated in HTO’s “Aloha Down Under” road show. OVB impacted 721 travel agents, 13 meeting planners, and several wholesalers in Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane with its destination message and presentation. OVB supported Hawaiian Airlines and HTO in the massive marketing push through presence in Travel Week Australia and WHO Week. OVB will also be lending some PR support on a number of upcoming media projects.

For more information on OVB please call (808) 524-0722, or visit them online at www.visit-oahu.com.

OVB Continues to Impact North American Agents

The Oahu Visitors Bureau (OVB) sales activities continued in June with attendance at the Leisure Travel Summit in Anaheim, June 10-12. Oahu destination seminars were packed by agents who signed up for OVB’s destination training and appointment slots at the tradeshow. The seminars were filled with OVB certified Oahu Destination Specialist from Funjet Vacations 500 Club. These agents are Funjet’s elite agents who book more than 500 seats annually through Funjet. The on-island Oahu Destination Specialist program ran from June 13 - June 18. OVB worked closely with our partners to the North – Companion Holidays – on the inaugural HMY Airways flight from Canada. Over 160 agents and nine media participated in OVB’s shortened on-island training program. Upcoming in July, OVB will support a number of North American Fams including one from Australia.

For more information on OVB please call (808) 524-0722, or visit them online at www.visit-oahu.com.

The Aloha Down Under Event was a Success, Attracting Hundreds of Travel Agents to Australia

Hawaiian Airlines and Hawaii Tourism Oceania's (HTO) Aloha Down Under Workshops that took place in the first week of June have been deemed an enormous success. HTO reported that an estimated 400 agents attended in Sydney, 160 in Melbourne and 130 in Brisbane. A separate VIP function was also held at the US Consul General's residence in Double Bay, for the key MICE operators, signifying the importance of the convention and incentive market to the destination of Hawaii. The objectives of the shows were to launch the new Hawaiian airlines services between Honolulu and Sydney, to provide valuable training on the destination, and to provide a number of the Hawaiian suppliers the opportunity to acquaint themselves with the Australian market place. This was the first time ever a Hawaiian road show of this magnitude has been held in Australia.
