Message From the President

HVCB 2004 Annual Luncheon

Aloha,

On September 2, HVCB held its 102nd Annual Luncheon at the Sheraton Waikiki and it was a grand success. We had a great turnout from the industry and Sheraton did a superb job with the catering and service. Our theme, Hookahi Ka Ilau Like Ana (Together With One Purpose), reflected the collaborative working relationship that HVCB enjoys with its Island Chapter Bureaus, the Hawaii Tourism Authority, and our visitor industry partners.

With Aloha Festivals kicking off next week, the luncheon began with an appearance by the Royal Court and kahiko performance in their honor by the Polynesian Cultural Center. HTA Chairman John Toner delivered a wonderful keynote address, stressing the need to develop tourism in ways that are consistent with our values and lifestyle.

HVCB presented its highest honor, the Maile Award, to five organizations celebrating 25-year anniversaries for their contributions to Hawaii’s tourism and quality of life.

• NFL Pro Bowl. For the past 25 years, pro football’s annual all-star game – and the ultimate incentive      reward for players – has been synonymous with Hawaii.

• Japan Airlines. Fifty years ago, JAL launched its inaugural transpacific flight. Today, JAL provides more

than one million seats – 60 percent of Hawaii’s total from Japan.

• Hawaiian Airlines. Hawaiian will mark its 75th anniversary on November 11. It is the second largest

provider of passenger air service from the mainland, and is also the Statewide Presenting Sponsor of

  Aloha Festivals through 2006.

• The Gas Company. For 100 years, the Gas Company has been essential to the community and

Hawaii’s visitor industry. The utility also developed the gas-lit technology used to keep tiki torches

  burning brightly throughout the islands.

• Waikiki Aquarium. Opened in 1904, the Waikiki Aquarium is America’s third oldest public aquarium. It    draws more than 350,000 visitors annually and is an invaluable teaching resource for preserving

  Hawaii’s marine environment.

HVCB also presented Mahalo Awards to Governor George Ariyoshi, who resigned this week as president of Prince Resorts Hawaii, and to Fred Duerr, who is retiring as general manager of Kona Village Resort.

Mahalo to all those who attended the luncheon, and to everyone for your continued support of the Hawaii Visitors and Convention Bureau.

Me ke aloha pumehana,

John Monahan
President & CEO

Hawaii’s Top City Markets Perform Well in the First Half of 2004

The number of visitors from many of the state’s top U.S. metropolitan statistical area (MSA) markets topped previous-year levels during the first half of 2004, in keeping with the record high domestic arrivals through June.

--> Hawaii’s top market, Los Angeles, was the source of 309,730 visitors in the first half of 2004,
up 9.2 percent from the same period in 2003.

--> Most of the top U.S. West markets showed continued growth during the first half of 2004, including

Sacramento (+9.3%); San Diego (+6.9%); Seattle (+5.6%); and the San Francisco Bay Area (+4.1%).

--> Each of the top U.S. East markets showed positive growth during the first six months of the year,

fueled in part by increased nonstop air service from the region: Washington D.C. (+10.6); New York

    (+6.1%); Chicago (+4.0%).

Hawaii is Cookin' for Planners at ASAE

That is the double entendre themed message the Hawaii Visitors and
Convention Bureau (HVCB) and its travel partners brought to meeting planners
attending the 2004 American Society of Association Executives (ASAE) Annual Meeting
and Exposition, August 14-17, at the Minneapolis Convention Center.

Hawaii hosted ASAE for its 2003 Annual Meeting last August at the Hawaii
Convention Center, drawing 3,000 association executives and major decision-makers.

This year HVCB and its partners hosted a dominant exhibit display highlighting Hawaii’s natural beauty, cultural appeal, diverse meetings infrastructure, and range of pre and post-meeting activities found statewide.

A grand prize trip was held August 17th to award a trip for two to Hawaii. Tradeshow attendees were also offered a "Hot Dates, Hot Rates" special promotion which was offered to entice bookings of association meetings during Hawaii's off-peak travel periods, particualary in spring and fall.

HVCB, its Islands Chapters, and the Hawaii Convention Center were joined by 16 travel providers. Mahalo to everyone who helped promote Hawaii, the Islands of Aloha.

For information about holding meetings in Hawaii, the Islands of Aloha, visit HVCB's Corporate Meetings & Incentives Web site at http://www.meethawaii.com or call the CMI division at (888) 424-2924.
