Earns National Meetings Award
Corporate and incentive meeting
planners nationwide have cast their votes and presented
the Hawaii Visitors and Convention Bureau (HVCB) with
a 2004 Award of Excellence from Corporate &
Incentive Travel magazine.
This is the third straight year HVCB has earned this
national award recognizing Hawaii's quality of service
in hosting corporate meetings and incentive programs.
Magazine subscribers recognized HVCB for Hawaii's excellence
with single-property meetings statewide, including on-site
support; coordinating transportation and pre- and post-tours
with attractions and vendors; assisting with accommodations
and site inspections; and providing supplier, facility
and venue information.
HVCB will receive Corporate & Incentive Travel's
Award of Excellence on November 13 at a black-tie,
gala awards ceremony in New York City.

Arrivals to Hawaii this Summer Hit All-Time High
Domestic arrivals to Hawaii this summer (June-August)
surpassed last year’s levels by 4.7 percent, reaching
a record-high 1.4 million arrivals. Arrivals from the
U.S. West totaled 831,812, a slight increase (0.4%)
over summer 2003. U.S. East summer arrivals reached
506,277 up 9.1 percent over prior year levels. International
arrivals equaled 528,950 this summer (up 19.9% from
summer 2003), helping boost total domestic and international
arrivals to Hawaii to a record 1.9 million (+8.4% over
2003).

to the Australian Travel Market
The Australian Travel Market
•Nationally, Australia ranks as the seventh largest
international travel market for the U.S.
•Australians stay longer and spend more than any
other international visitor to the U.S.
•Buoyed by a rising Australian Dollar, travelers
from “Down Under” have seen their buying
power rise
by nearly 20 percent
over the past year.
•Hawaii welcomed nearly 79,000 visitors from Australia
in 2003
•Added flights and new air service between Australia
and Hawaii could boost travel
from this market in 2004.

Visitors Bureau August 2004 Summary
Kauai Visitors Bureau Participates in Norcal
Ohana Luau
In August, the Kauai Visitors Bureau Participated in
Norcal Ohana Luau in Pleasanton, CA (San Francisco area)
on August 17, 2004. Kauai good exposure by having a
prominent location in the restaurant during the tradeshow.
It was a great time to network with the 106 travel agents
in attendance.
ASTA World Congress in Hong Kong
The Kauai Visitors Bureau along with HVCB and the other
island chapters attended the 74th ASTA World Congress
Event in Hong Kong from September 28 – October
3, 2004. This event included two days of tradeshows,
informative seminars and a business exchange on October
1, 2004.
KVB Promotes Family Travel with Themed Press
Trip
KVB hosted its first of three press trips of 2004, the
“Kauai Family Adventure” press trip was
held on August 9 - 15. Attendees on the trip represented
media outlets such as Seattle Post-Intelligencer,
City Parent, Chicago Parent, The
Province, Family Circle, the Denver
Post and Travel Agent.
Each writer brought along a keiki to experience the
family-friendly accommodations, restaurants and activities.
Writers on the trip spent time exploring Kauai to complete
their stories with activities including ATV tours, zipline
tours and a snorkeling adventure. Mahalo to all KVB
members who provided assistance!

HTA Marketing Contractors Update:
Hawaii Tourism Oceania
The "Australian Way" visits Hawaii
Hawaii Tourism Oceania (HTO) was pleased to host two
journalists from "The Australian Way" (Qantas
Airways in-flight Magazine). The journalist and photographer
team visited Oahu and Kauai with a mission of researching
two six page features on the destination. The magazine
is a monthly publication with a circulation of 150,000.
It is carried on all domestic and international Qantas
flights and is a high end publication focusing on lifestyle,
arts, travel and culture. The Oahu story is due to be
published in late 2004 in order to highlight the New
Qantas schedule due to be implemented in November.

GREAT month of PR exposure for HTO!
HTO enjoyed a great
month of PR in September with over 12 articles appearing
in the weekend papers, golf magazines, and an automotive
magazine. Hawaii's majestic golf courses as well as
its world class spas were featured along with two full
page articles on the Big Island, its volcano and lava
tubes, In addition, three articles featuring Waikiki
and Oahu, and one outlining what to do and see on a
short break to Kauai were also featured. A great month,
offering the Australian consumer an in-depth look at
the diversity of experiences on all of the Islands.
The total value of the exposure for this month was $163,000.

Successful Campaigns "Down Under"
HTO participated in several
successful campaigns over the last few months in conjunction
with wholesalers Explore Holidays,Travelscene/Amex,
and Hawaiian Airlines. The Hawaii campaign targeted
school holiday travel and ran over three weeks in NSW
weekend newspapers. HTO's press campaign contained an
editorial element outlining ideas for families considering
traveling to Hawaii. The campaign was a success with
over 1,200 enquiries over the three week period. In
early September HTO was also involved in a week long
East Coast TV campaign with Flight Centre, Creative
Holidays and Hawaiian Airlines. There was also a great
response to this campaign with over 1000 quotes during
the week.
